The Supreme Court has sought responses from the Union government on a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) that demands a CBI probe into an alleged organised tiger poaching syndicate.
The PIL, filed by lawyer Gaurav Kumar Bansal, highlighted the grave threat to tigers from a transnational poaching network operating in states like Maharashtra and Madhya Pradesh.
Bansal argued that the racket, which involves the smuggling of animal parts to Myanmar, is a deep-rooted criminal network that cannot be handled by a single state's agencies.
The court’s intervention was sought for a comprehensive investigation to ensure the survival of the national animal.
