Supreme Court Acquits Husband in Abetment to Suicide Case, Cites Lack of Direct Evidence

  • Case Name: Ravindra Singh v The State Of Uttarakhand

The SC overturned the conviction of a husband under Section 306 of IPC, holding that there was no direct or convincing evidence to prove he instigated or encouraged his wife to commit suicide.

The case involved the suicide of the wife due to burn injuries at her matrimonial home in Uttarakhand.

The prosecution claimed the husband had abandoned her, was living with another woman, and had a quarrel with her two days before her death.

Though convicted by the trial court in 2001 and the HC in 2013, the Supreme Court found these facts insufficient and acquitted him.
