Supreme Court Quashes Madras HC Order Barring CM’s Name in Govt Schemes, Imposes ₹10 Lakh Cost

The Supreme Court quashed a Madras High Court order barring the use of a sitting Chief Minister's name in government schemes, calling it legally flawed.

A Bench led by CJI BR Gavai also dismissed the original writ petition filed by AIADMK MP CV Shanmugam, terming it politically motivated, and imposed costs of ₹10 lakh.

The Court noted that naming schemes after political leaders is a widespread practice, and selectively targeting one violates fairness.

It warned against using courts for political battles better fought in the electoral arena. The pending petition was also dismissed.
