Supreme Court Criticizes Centre and State Governments for Failing to Install CCTV Systems in Police Stations

The Supreme Court has strongly criticized the central and state governments for failing to install CCTV cameras in police stations and central investigative agencies, noting widespread non-compliance with its earlier directives.

The Bench termed custodial deaths a “blot on the system" and observed that the Union government appeared to be taking the Court "too lightly", as compliance affidavits were largely absent.

The court emphasized that electronic surveillance is crucial for protecting citizens' rights and preventing custodial abuse, demanding immediate action plans and compliance reports from all jurisdictions. It suggested leveraging AI to monitor CCTV functionality and raise alerts when cameras are non-functional.

The matter will now be heard on December 16.
