SC Takes Suo Motu Cognisance of Struggles of Disabled Military Cadets, Explores Rehabilitation Options

The Supreme Court has initiated a suo motu case to address the hardships faced by military cadets who suffer disability during training, based on a report in The Indian Express.

The Court issued notices to the Ministry of Defence, Finance, Service Chiefs, Ex-Servicemen Welfare, and Social Justice (Disability) departments. It will examine the enhancement of monthly compensation, insurance coverage, reassessment of fitness, rehabilitation, and applicability of the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act, 2016.

The Court observed that such cadets, though not ex-servicemen, deserve benefits or alternative roles, including ancillary services.

The Centre has been directed to respond by September 4.
