The Supreme Court has suo motu revived late Prof. Shamnad Basheer’s 2015 PIL seeking a permanent statutory body to conduct CLAT, citing persistent issues with exam management.
While hearing pleas on CLAT-UG 2025 errors, the Court issued notices to the Union Government, BCI, and NLUs, noting that no steps were taken since its 2018 directions.
It criticised the NLU Consortium for a “casual” approach to setting papers.
Prof. Basheer’s petition flagged recurring issues such as flawed questions, lack of transparency, RTI violations, and poor administration, and called for a structured, accountable mechanism for fair conduct of CLAT.
