Supreme Court to Hear Plea Challenging QR Code Mandate on Eateries Along Kanwar Yatra Route

  • Case Name: Apoorvanand Jha & Anr. v. UOI & Ors.

A Supreme Court application challenges UP and Uttarakhand's directive mandating eateries along the Kanwar Yatra route to display QR codes revealing owners’ identities, such as the owner’s name and registration number.

Filed by Prof. Apoorvanand, the plea argues this violates a previous Supreme Court order prohibiting forced disclosure of sellers’ identities and warns the directive facilitates religious profiling and may provoke mob violence.

It argues the move lacks legal authority and contravenes norms, as ownership disclosures are only required inside premises, not on public signage.

The matter is linked to a pending writ petition, which will be heard by Justices MM Sundresh and NK Singh on July 15.
