Centre Introduces Securities Markets Code Bill, 2025 To Overhaul Market Regulation

The Union Government has introduced the Securities Markets Code Bill, 2025, proposing a comprehensive overhaul of India’s securities regulation framework.

The Bill aims to consolidate key market laws and expand the Securities and Exchange Board of India’s Board from nine to up to fifteen members to enhance expertise and institutional capacity.

It also proposes stronger governance measures, including greater transparency and public consultation in rule-making, stricter conflict-of-interest norms, and streamlined enforcement processes.

The proposed code seeks to modernise securities regulation, enhance investor protection, improve regulatory accountability, and promote ease of doing business in India’s capital markets.
