US Senate Passes Laken Riley Act Targeting Illegal Immigrants Accused of Crimes

The Senate passed the Laken Riley Act, mandating the detention of illegal migrants accused of theft and violent crimes.

The bill is named after a Georgia nursing student killed by an illegal immigrant.

Under this bill, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) must detain an individual who: 

(1) is unlawfully present in the United States or did not possess the necessary documents when applying for admission; and (2) has been charged with, arrested for, convicted for, or admits to having committed acts that constitute the essential elements of burglary, theft, larceny, or shoplifting. 

This bill is passed by 64-35, with 12 Democrats supporting it.
