SFI Protests in Madurai Against UGC Draft Rules Over Privatization, Language Bias

The Students’ Federation of India (SFI) staged protests in Madurai opposing the UGC’s draft regulations, alleging they would commercialize education and curb access for marginalized groups.

Students demanded withdrawal of provisions they claim would hike fees, weaken reservation, and promote privatization.

They also objected to the prescribed reference books being mainly in Hindi and Sanskrit, calling it an attempt to impose cultural dominance over regional languages like Tamil, Malayalam, and Kannada.

The agitation reflects rising student concerns over higher education reforms and the need for inclusive, equitable policy-making.
