Sharjeel Imam Moves Supreme Court Against Delhi HC’s Bail Denial in Delhi Riots Conspiracy Case

Sharjeel Imam has approached the Supreme Court challenging the Delhi High Court’s September 2 order denying him bail in the 2020 Delhi riots “larger conspiracy” case under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act.

Imam, arrested in January 2020, is accused of delivering inflammatory speeches to mobilise protests on communal lines.

The High Court also denied bail to Umar Khalid, Khalid Saifi, Shifa-Ur-Rehman, Meeran Haider, Gulfisha Fatima, Athar Khan, and others, noting their “grave” roles.

The court said the trial must progress naturally, cautioning against a hurried process. The Supreme Court is yet to list Imam’s plea.
