Sikkim Declared India’s First Paperless State Judiciary by CJI Surya Kant

Chief Justice of India Surya Kant has declared Sikkim the first paperless state judiciary during a national conclave in Gangtok.

This digital shift replaces physical paperwork with e-filing and online hearings, overcoming geographical barriers in the mountainous region. The CJI emphasized that modern judicial education must move beyond basic digital literacy to address algorithmic systems and AI bias.

He advocated for the "careful infusion" of AI in trial courts, such as asset verification in recovery suits; to reduce unnecessary litigation.

However, he maintained that technology must remain an aid to fairness, ensuring the human element remains central to constitutional decision-making.
