SIM-Binding for WhatsApp can Curb Digital Arrest Scams: Centre to Supreme Court

The Centre has informed the Supreme Court that SIM-binding for platforms like WhatsApp can help curb digital arrest scams.

In a status report filed in a suo motu case, the Department of Telecommunications said misuse of OTT platforms was a major vector for such frauds. 

The Court was told that biometric SIM verification rules under the Telecommunications Act, 2023 are being finalised and that technological measures, including blocking spoofed international calls, have significantly reduced scam calls.

The Court directed swift implementation of these measures.
