Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman highlighted the vital role of the Competition Commission of India (CCI) in ensuring free and fair markets, calling it not just an economic necessity but a democratic imperative.
Speaking at the CCI’s 16th Annual Day in New Delhi, she said competition enhances efficiency, drives innovation, and protects consumer interest.
She emphasised that monopolies hinder innovation, while competition forces evolution in services, technology, and delivery.
Calling the Competition Act, 2002 a landmark reform, she underlined CCI’s mandate to prevent anti-competitive practices, ensure freedom of trade, and enable swift approvals without compromising oversight in the face of evolving global and digital challenges.
