“Special Court System has Become a Mockery”: Supreme Court Flags Overburdened Judiciary

The Supreme Court criticised the functioning of special courts, observing that the system has “become a mockery” due to the excessive burden on judges.

It noted that instead of easing case backlogs, special courts are struggling under heavy caseloads and inadequate judicial capacity.

The Court highlighted that judges handling these courts are already overworked, which affects the efficiency and purpose for which such courts were established.

Emphasising the need for structural reforms, the Court signalled that merely creating special courts without adequate infrastructure and staffing fails to address delays in the justice delivery system.
