Supreme Court Adjourns Suo Motu Hearing on January 29 in RG Kar Murder-Rape Case

The Supreme Court, in a suo motu case addressing the safety of medical professionals following the RG Kar Medical College rape and murder incident, will hear the matter on January 29. 

Sanjay Roy, convicted of the crime, was sentenced to life imprisonment by a special Kolkata court on January 20.

The West Bengal government has appealed to the Calcutta High Court, seeking the death penalty, citing it as the “rarest of rare” cases. 

The CBI, opposing the state's appeal, claims it holds the right to challenge the sentence.

The Calcutta High Court will also hear related appeals on January 27.
