Supreme Court Agrees to Hear Journalists’ Plea Alleging Assault, Threat to Life from MP Police

  • Case Name: Shashikant Jatav @ Shashikant Goyal & Anr v. State of Madhya Pradesh

Two journalists have approached the Supreme Court alleging they were assaulted, threatened, and subjected to casteist abuse by Madhya Pradesh police officials after reporting on illegal sand mining activities in the Chambal river region.

The journalists claim they were summoned under the pretense of having tea with Superintendent of Police Asit Yadav but were instead detained, beaten, and subjected to casteist slurs.

Fearing for their safety and potential arrest in fabricated cases, the journalists fled to Delhi and filed a writ petition under Article 32 of the Constitution.

The Supreme Court, while questioning why they had not approached the Madhya Pradesh High Court, agreed to urgently list the matter for hearing.
