Supreme Court Seeks Centre’s Reply on Tamil Nadu’s Plea for EWS Quota Reimbursement

The Supreme Court has sought the central government’s response to a plea by the Tamil Nadu government seeking reimbursement of funds spent on implementing the 10% Economically Weaker Sections (EWS) quota in education and jobs.

Tamil Nadu argued that the EWS policy, mandated by the central government, imposes a financial burden on states without adequate fiscal support.

A bench of Justices Vikram Nath and Sandeep Mehta issued notice and posted the matter for September 29.

The State contended the High Court wrongly fixed responsibility solely on it, ignoring the joint funding mandate under Section 7 of the RTE Act.
