Supreme Court Asks Centre to Bring Law to Protect the Rights of Domestic Workers

  • Case Name: Ajay Malik v. State of Uttarakhand
  • Judge(s): Justices Surya Kant and N Kotiswar Singh

The Supreme Court has urged the Central government to frame a law for the protection of domestic workers while quashing a case against a man accused of wrongful confinement of a housemaid.

The Bench directed the Labour Ministry to form a committee and submit recommendations within six months.

The Court noted that domestic workers lack legal protection, often face low wages, and unsafe conditions, and are excluded from labour laws.

The case was filed under Sections 370, 343, and 120B IPC but was quashed due to lack of evidence.
