The Supreme Court called the killing of Anjel Chakma, a 24-year-old MBA student from Tripura, an unfortunate incident and said such attacks must be curbed “with an iron hand.”
The Court was hearing a PIL raising concerns about increasing attacks on students from North East India, including alleged racially motivated violence in educational settings.
The petition sought penal provisions to deal with group-based violence on grounds like race, place of birth, and language, and also requested interim guidelines until a law is enacted.
The Court said this is largely for Parliament to consider, and asked the Attorney General to refer the issue to the competent authority.
