Supreme Court Criticises Delay by High Court Judges in Pronouncing Reserved Judgments

The Supreme Court has strongly criticised the practice of High Court judges reserving judgments and delaying their pronouncement for months, calling it an “ailment” that must end.

The Bench stressed that such delays undermine the majesty of law and erode public confidence in the justice system. It noted recurring issues where matters are repeatedly listed for “further directions” despite completed arguments.

The Court indicated that a Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) may soon be issued to curb delays and said the issue will be discussed with High Court Chief Justices.

It also directed prompt uploading of delayed judgments.
