The Supreme Court granted bail to Ramnath Mishra, an accused in a CBI case, after the Allahabad High Court adjourned his bail plea 43 times.
The Bench of Chief Justice BR Gavai and Justice NV Anjaria emphasised that personal liberty matters must be heard swiftly and criticised the High Court for repeatedly delaying the hearing.
Despite opposition from the CBI, the Supreme Court noted Mishra had already spent over three-and-a-half years in custody and granted bail, directing release subject to trial court satisfaction.
Earlier, the Court had granted bail to a co-accused after 27 adjournments by the High Court.
