The Supreme Court declined a petition seeking to exclude Aadhaar from the list of documents accepted for identity verification under the Representation of the People Act.
The Court observed that the law already recognises Aadhaar as a valid proof of identity, and there was no basis to single it out for exclusion amid the ongoing voter list revision process.
The Bench noted risks of forgery apply equally to other government-issued documents and rejected arguments to treat Aadhaar differently.
The petition was dismissed with no change to Aadhaar’s status as an identity document.
