Supreme Court Declines to Entertain Pleas Against Assam CM, Asks Petitioners to Approach High Court

The Supreme Court of India refused to entertain petitions alleging hate speech by Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, directing the petitioners to approach the jurisdictional High Court instead.

A Bench led by Chief Justice Surya Kant observed that constitutional High Courts should not be bypassed and cautioned against treating the apex court as a “shortcut” forum.

The Court remarked that, unless the High Courts had become grounds for political battles, litigants must first exhaust remedies under Article 226 before invoking Article 32.

The petitions, filed by leaders including Annie Raja and others, sought action over alleged remarks targeting Muslims and a controversial video circulated by the Assam BJP.
