Supreme Court Demands Implementation Status of 25% RTE Reservation in Private Schools

The Supreme Court has directed ten States and three Union Territories to provide evidence regarding the implementation of Section 12(1)(c) of the Right to Education (RTE) Act, 2009.

This provision mandates non-minority private unaided schools to reserve at least 25% of entry-level seats for children from disadvantaged backgrounds.

The Bench warned that failure to demonstrate "faithful implementation" would result in summoning the Principal Secretaries of Education.

The order follows a petition highlighting that several regions, including West Bengal, Punjab, and Kerala, have either refused to implement the mandate, framed bypass rules, or remained silent on enforcement.
