A Bihar government employee from the 'Tanti' caste, initially OBC, sought Scheduled Caste (SC) benefits for a Group B promotion after Bihar reclassified the caste as SC in 2015.
The Supreme Court ruled that only the President can amend caste classifications, and the Bihar government cannot reclassify the 'Tanti' caste for SC benefits and overturned the Patna High Court's decision
The Supreme Court highlighted its earlier decision in Dr Bhim Rao Ambedkar Vichar Manch v. State of Bihar,2024, which held that State Governments lack the authority to amend Presidential notifications regarding caste classifications.
