The Supreme Court has directed the Delhi government to frame a Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) to effectively enforce free medical treatment for Economically Weaker Section (EWS) patients in private hospitals built on subsidised public land.
The Court expressed concern over inadequate implementation of existing obligations requiring such hospitals to provide free treatment and beds to EWS patients.
Stressing the need for transparency and accountability, the bench asked the government to establish a proper mechanism for monitoring compliance, addressing grievances, and disseminating information to beneficiaries.
The matter was being heard in a petition concerning denial of free healthcare benefits to eligible EWS patients in Delhi.
