The Supreme Court has directed the Central government, States, and Union Territories to ensure effective implementation of the Protection of Women from Domestic Violence Act, 2005.
All Authorities must appoint Protection Officers under Section 9 by identifying officials from Women and Child Development departments within six weeks.
The Court, under Section 11, mandated widespread awareness of the DV Act through various media channels. It also directed NALSA to ensure free legal aid for women and asked States to strengthen shelter homes.
The order came on a plea highlighting persistent domestic violence despite the Act’s enactment over 15 years ago. The next hearing is scheduled for July 23, 2025.
