The Supreme Court directed all States and Union Territories to formulate rules on road safety within six months to regulate the movement of non-motorised vehicles and pedestrians.
The rules are to be framed under Sections 138(1A) and 210D of the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988. The order arose from a petition by Coimbatore-based orthopaedic surgeon S. Rajaseekaran, who highlighted the high incidence of road accidents in India.
The petitioner urged improvements in infrastructure and post-accident care to reduce fatalities and severe injuries. The Court mandated uniform and effective measures to enhance road safety nationwide.
