The Supreme Court ruled that disapproving a marriage does not amount to abetment of suicide under Section 306 of the IPC.
The bench quashed a chargesheet against a woman accused of abetting the suicide of another woman in love with her son.
The court found no evidence linking the appellant’s remarks or actions to direct or indirect instigation of suicide.
It clarified that mere disapproval or remarks such as asking the deceased not to be alive if she cannot live without marrying, cannot sustain a charge under Section 306 IPC, as no pressure or coercion was evident.
