Supreme Court Disposes of Plea Against Sonam Wangchuk’s Detention Following His Release

The Supreme Court has closed the habeas corpus petition challenging the detention of Ladakh activist Sonam Wangchuk.

A Bench of Justices Aravind Kumar and PB Varale noted that the plea became infructuous after the Central government revoked the detention order on March 14.

Although Senior Advocate Kapil Sibal requested the Court to keep the matter pending, the Bench declined, questioning the necessity of further proceedings post-release.

Sonam Wangchuk was originally detained under the National Security Act in September 2025 following protests in Leh regarding statehood and Sixth Schedule status for Ladakh.
