Supreme Court Emphasizes Need for Wheelchair-Compatible Cabs for Persons with Disabilities

The Supreme Court has underscored the necessity for cabs to accommodate wheelchairs to ensure effective "first and last mile" connectivity for Persons with Disabilities (PwD).

The Bench observed that travelers in metropolitan cities heavily rely on cab services, yet face accessibility hurdles, particularly in vehicles with CNG cylinders.

The Court suggested implementing universal designs, such as specialized carriers or modified vehicles, to ensure assistive devices are not excluded from public transport.

The Court sought assistance from the Additional Solicitor General to find practical ways to integrate these devices into the transport ecosystem.
