The Supreme Court has expressed strong displeasure over the continued delay in appointing the Chairman and members of the National Safai Karamchari Commission, despite repeated assurances by the Union Government.
Observing that the appointments were moving at a “snail’s pace,” the Court granted the Centre a final four-week opportunity to complete the process.
In the event of non-compliance, the Court warned that it would constitute an ad hoc committee to discharge the Commission’s functions.
The Bench noted that the delay undermines efforts toward safeguarding the rights and dignity of Safai Karamcharis and the complete eradication of manual scavenging, an issue the Court has been closely monitoring through continuous directions.
