The Supreme Court extended its earlier directions on women’s reservation in State Bar Council elections to the Bar Councils of Telangana and Andhra Pradesh.
Clarifying its December 8 order, the Court directed that 30% of seats in these Bar Councils be reserved for women advocates, with 20% filled through elections and 10% through co-option.
The clarification was issued after noting that election notifications in both States are yet to be issued. The Court further directed that proposals for co-option, wherever required, be placed before it to ensure adequate representation.
These directions form part of the Court’s continuing supervision of the phased conduct of Bar Council elections across the country.
