Supreme Court Flags Sonam Wangchuk’s Health, Asks Centre to Reconsider NSA Detention

The Supreme Court requested the Central government to consider re-evaluating the preventive detention of Sonam Wangchuk under the National Security Act, noting that reports placed before it indicated that his health condition was not satisfactory after nearly five months in detention.

The case arose from a plea filed by his wife challenging the detention ordered following protests in Leh in September 2025 over demands for statehood and Sixth Schedule status for the Union Territory of Ladakh.

While the Centre relied on the report of the Advisory Board, the Court observed that a detention order can still be examined if it does not meet the legal requirements under the NSA.
