The Supreme Court has given States and Union Territories one last chance to submit compliance reports regarding its ruling in Sukanya Shantha v. Union of India.
This ruling found that discrimination based on caste, gender, and disability in prisons is unconstitutional under Articles 14, 15, 17, 21, and 23 of the Constitution.
The Court instructed all States, Union Territories, and the Union Government to update their Prison Manuals, remove any mentions of caste, and stop discriminatory practices.
NALSA(National Legal Services Authority) was requested to provide a joint compliance report.
The goal of this judgment is to promote equality and fairness in the management of prisons.
