The Supreme Court has temporarily stayed the eviction of Colaba Causeway hawkers, stating they cannot be removed without the leave of this court.
This follows a Special Leave Petition (SLP) filed by the Colaba Causeway Tourism Hawkers’ Stall Union, challenging a Bombay High Court order.
The SLP involves 253 hawkers, although the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) asserts that only 76 are licensed stall owners under the Street Vendors (Protection of Livelihood and Regulation of Street Vending) Act, 2014, which remains unnotified by the state.
Local people would also be given an opportunity to be heard in this regard. The stay provides temporary relief while the legal review continues.
