Supreme Court Issues Notice to Delhi Police on Bail Pleas of Umar Khalid, Sharjeel Imam in 2020 Riots Case

The Supreme Court has issued notice to Delhi Police on the bail pleas of activists Umar Khalid and Sharjeel Imam, and others, in the 2020 Delhi riots conspiracy case.

The accused have challenged the Delhi High Court’s refusal to grant them bail.

A bench of Justices Aravind Kumar and N.V. Anjaria has scheduled the matter for a hearing on October 7. The petitioners' counsel emphasised that the accused have been in pre-trial detention for nearly five years.

The bail pleas are related to charges under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA), which were filed by Delhi Police, alleging a larger conspiracy behind the violence.
