Supreme Court Issues Notice on PIL Seeking Enforcement of Disability Rights in Prisons

The Supreme Court issued notice to the center after hearing a PIL urging the government to properly enforce the law protecting the rights of people with disabilities (PWD) in prisons.  

The petitioner argues that PWD prisoners lack reasonable accommodations, violating their fundamental rights. The plea claims that prisons lack necessary facilities for disabled inmates, breaching their legal and constitutional rights. 

Citing Accused 'X' v. State of Maharashtra (2019) and the Mental Healthcare Act, 2017, the plea highlights the absence of prison provisions under the RPwD Act, 2016.

Hence, the court has scheduled the case for the next hearing on April 8, 2025.
