The Supreme Court has issued notice to the Bar Council of Uttar Pradesh (BCUP) following a writ petition by advocate Deepak Yadav.
The petition challenges BCUP’s demand for ₹14,000 for a Certificate of Practice despite the Supreme Court’s ruling in Gaurav Kumar v. Union of India (2024), which capped enrollment fees under Section 24 of the Advocates Act, 1961, at ₹750 for the general category and ₹125 for SC/ST lawyers.
Sitting judges expressed concern that, despite clear legal directions, the UP Bar Council’s July 2025 communication appears to violate the statutory limits. The case will proceed further, with notice issued accordingly.
