Supreme Court Imposes Jail and ₹5 Lakh Fine for Defying Eviction Order

The Supreme Court has sentenced a tenant to simple imprisonment in Tihar Jail for disobeying its order to vacate a commercial premises, while imposing a ₹5 lakh fine on an elderly co-tenant.

A bench of Justices JK Maheshwari and Vijay Bishnoi sentenced one contemnor to three months' civil imprisonment and directed that he be taken into custody and lodged in Tihar Jail.

The court took strict action against the willful defiance of its earlier eviction directive, emphasising that court orders cannot be flouted with impunity.

The court underscored the judiciary's zero tolerance for contempt of court and deliberate non-compliance with its directives.
