Supreme Court Justice Manmohan Says AI Can Tackle 60% of Litigation Backlog But Warns Against Over-Reliance

At the AI & Tech Summit 2025, Supreme Court Justice Manmohan said Artificial Intelligence could help resolve nearly 60% of India’s litigation backlog by taking over routine, small-ticket cases and freeing judges from clerical and repetitive tasks.

He highlighted the Supreme Court’s SU-PACE tool, which scans files, identifies issues, and locates relevant precedents, as an example of emerging hybrid judicial models.

At the same time, he cautioned against over-reliance on AI, noting risks such as algorithmic bias, hallucinated case laws, and privacy concerns.

Justice Manmohan emphasized that complex matters requiring reasoning, empathy, and constitutional sensitivity must remain with human judges.
