Supreme Court Mandates Reasons for Voter Inclusion/Exclusion, Sets Up 19 Appellate Tribunals in WB

The Supreme Court directed the establishment of 19 appellate tribunals in West Bengal to handle disputes arising from the Special Intensive Revision of voter rolls.

Emphasising transparency, the Court mandated that clear reasons must be recorded and supplied for every inclusion or exclusion of a voter, enabling meaningful appeals.

It noted concerns that a lack of reasoning would render the appellate process ineffective. The tribunals, headed by former judges, will have full access to records and function under principles of natural justice.

Balancing the scale and urgency of the exercise, the Court ensured that efficiency does not compromise fairness in determining electoral rights.
