Supreme Court Orders CBI Probe Into Karur Stampede at Vijay’s TVK Rally

The Supreme Court has ordered a CBI probe into the Karur stampede during actor Vijay’s Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) rally on September 27, which claimed 41 lives and injured around 60 people.

A three-member Supervisory Committee, headed by former Supreme Court judge Justice Ajay Rastogi, will monitor the investigation, assisted by two senior IPS officers from the Tamil Nadu cadre who are not natives of the state.

The Court criticised the Madras High Court for constituting a State SIT and questioned its jurisdiction, noting that the original plea only sought an SOP for rallies. Tamil Nadu has been directed to file its counter within eight weeks.
