The Supreme Court of India passed directions to mandate the government to eradicate manual scavenging in six major metropolitan areas: Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Kolkata, Bengaluru, and Hyderabad.
The Court underscored that manual scavenging, which entails the manual removal of human waste, is both illegal and inhumane.
It has directed authorities to take prompt action to completely eliminate this practice, stressing the importance of utilizing appropriate machinery and modern technology for sanitation tasks.
Additionally, the government is required to rehabilitate individuals engaged in manual scavenging and offer them alternative employment opportunities.
