The Supreme Court has issued sweeping orders to tackle a growing stray dog menace in Delhi-NCR, labelling the situation “extremely grim” amid nearly 2,000 daily dog bite cases.
The court directed civic authorities, including the Delhi government, MCD, NDMC, and bodies in Noida, Gurugram, and Ghaziabad, to round up all stray dogs within eight weeks and securely house up to 5,000 dogs, CCTV-monitored shelters where they must be sterilised and immunised.
A dedicated helpline must be set up within a week to respond to bite incidents within four hours, and anyone obstructing the effort faces strict legal action.
The Court criticised existing Animal Birth Control Rules as “absurd,” stressing public safety over sentiment.
