Supreme Court Orders Uniform Pay for Consumer Commission Members, Retrospective from July 2020

The Supreme Court has mandated uniform salaries and allowances for presidents and members of state and district consumer commissions across India.

Citing disparities that undermine independence and dignity, the Court directed that state commission members and district commission presidents receive pay equal to District Judges in the super time scale, while district commission members match judges in the selection grade

The order applies retrospectively from July 2020, with arrears to be cleared within six months. The Court invoked Article 142 to ensure that these directions override existing Model Rules.

The matter is listed for September 22, 2025.
