Supreme Court Petition Challenges ECI Move to Halt Assam’s Special Electoral Roll Revision

A petition has been filed before the Supreme Court challenging the Election Commission of India’s (ECI) November 17 order directing only a “Special Revision” of electoral rolls in Assam, instead of a “Special Intensive Revision” (SIR) as done in Bihar and twelve other States and Union Territories.

The petitioner, former Gauhati High Court Bar Association President, Mrinal Kumar Choudhury, alleged that the ECI’s decision is arbitrary and discriminatory, raising concerns that illegal immigrants may gain voting rights, causing demographic imbalance in the State.

The plea further seeks a direction that Aadhaar not be accepted as a valid document for voter enrolment during the revision process.
