Cases Against SHUATS VC Quashed, UP Conversion Law Clarified: Supreme Court

The Supreme Court has quashed criminal cases against the Vice-Chancellor of SHUATS University, holding that organising religious events or engaging in charity is not an offence under the Uttar Pradesh Prohibition of Unlawful Conversion of Religion Act.

The Court noted that one FIR was invalid as it wasn’t filed by a victim or relative, which was mandatory under the law at the time.

The Court clarified that the Act targets only forced, fraudulent, or induced conversions, not legitimate religious or philanthropic activities.
