Supreme Court Quashes 498A Case, Cites Fatal Delay and Vague Allegations against In-Laws

The Supreme Court recently quashed a dowry harassment case against a woman’s in-laws, emphasizing that an unexplained seven-year delay in filing a complaint is "fatal" to matrimonial disputes.

A bench of Justice BV Nagarathna and Justice Ujjal Bhuyan observed that while the law protects the vigilant, it does not assist those who "dawdle on their rights."

The Court found the allegations of a ₹8.5 lakh demand and physical cruelty to be vague and lacked corroborative evidence.

Reitrating that naming relatives without specific roles is a trend that must be "nipped in the bud" to prevent the misuse of Section 498A IPC.
